Nexterra, accelerated by La Lonja, drives sustainable innovation with support from Puertos del Estado

  • This public backing from Puertos del Estado will allow the company to develop two disruptive projects: Feshlock and Pyrolina, both based in Chitosan, a circular economy biopolymer

Nexterra, a Spanish company specialized in agricultural Chitosan and accelerated by La Lonja de la Innovación, has taken a qualitative leap in its objective to promote sustainability thanks to a grant from Puertos del Estado.

This funding, obtained with the support of Puerto de Huelva as a facilitator, will enable Nexterra to develop two revolutionary projects: Freshlock and Pyrolina, both based on Chitosan, a biopolymer derived from crustacean shells that exemplifies the principles of the circular economy.

The company joined La Lonja de la Innovación in the 2024 call to accelerate its project. It focuses on offering specialized Chitosan-based solutions for sustainable agriculture, demonstrating its potential to strengthen crops and reducing the impact of fungi, viruses and bacteria on both plants and soil.

Now, following a rigorous selection process, in which the Port of Huelva played a facilitating role, the viability, social impact, and technological component of the initiative have been evaluated, resulting in the grant awarded by Puertos del Estado. This recognition translates into the development of two high-value-added projects:

  • Freshlock. An odor-neutralizing spray specifically designed for fish and fresh products. Thanks to its advanced formula, Freshlock eliminates unwanted odors and extends the product’s shelf life, offering an effective solution for preservation and quality in the food supply chain.
  • Pyrolina. This innovative fire-extinguishing lance sprays a fully biodegradable fire-retardant gel that not only puts out flames but also protects surfaces from fire. Pyrolina is designed for high-risk environments, making it an essential safety tool for port infrastructures and other critical sectors.

“This grant represents a milestone for Nexterra,” says Chio Diez, COO of the company. “It allows us to continue investing in innovation and sustainability, and we are confident that Freshlock and Pyrolina will be game-changers in their respective sectors.”

The grant received by Nexterra is part of the Idea Program from the Ports 4.0 Fund. This program supports innovative projects in the early stages of technological development, understanding an idea as the set of actions necessary to develop a product, service, or process during its initial development phase.

Don’t forget that the new Ports 4.0 fund call, with a total allocation of €11,250,000 under the pre-commercial project category, remains open until March 24th. If you're interested, contact info@lalonja.tech so we can learn about your project and explore ways to align it with Puerto de Huelva to submit it with their support.

This is just one of the many services offered by La Lonja de la Innovación’s acceleration program, we look forward to seeing you!
