When a startup or product team has dozens of ideas to develop, the question isn\u2019t what to do, but what to do first. Choosing the wrong priorities can delay deliveries, waste resources or lead to spending time on features and tasks that ultimately don\u2019t add value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To avoid this, there are prioritization frameworks that help to evaluate and rank priorities. One of the most used, and the one we\u2019ll explain in this article, is RICE methodology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are prioritization frameworks?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before defining this methodology, it is important to understand what a prioritization framework is. These frameworks simplify decision-making during product development. They help teams choose which tasks to execute over others and serve as a roadmap to guide teams in making informed priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prioritization frameworks are important for improving resource management, aligning with a project\u2019s stakeholders and business objectives, and delivering greater value to customers by meeting their needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the RICE prioritization framework?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As we mentioned earlier, there are different prioritization frameworks, but today we are going to focus on one of them: the RICE framework. This methodology was popularized by the product team at Intercom<\/a> as an alternative to prioritization methods based on intuition. In the search for a methodology grounded in objectivity, RICE was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RICE stands for Reach, Impact, Confidence, and Effort, the four criteria used to evaluate each project idea. In this framework, a numerical score is assigned to each of these criteria for every initiative or task to be carried out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Reach. <\/strong>Measures the number of users who will be affected by a feature within a given period.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Impact. <\/strong>This criterion estimates how much a feature will affect the user experience or business objectives. It is measured using the following scale:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    • 3 \u2192 Massive impact<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • 2 \u2192 High impact<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • 1 \u2192 Medium impact<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • 0.5 \u2192 Low impact<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • 0.25 \u2192 Minimal impact<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      1. Confidence. <\/strong>Measures how confident the team is in the estimates made for the previous two criteria, Reach and Impact. It is expressed as a percentage and reflects the reliability of the data.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
          \n
        • 100% \u2192 High confidence; the data is based on tests and research.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • 50% \u2192 Medium confidence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • 20% \u2192 Low confidence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          1. Effort. <\/strong>This estimates the total amount of work required to develop the feature being evaluated. It should be expressed in terms of the time required and the number of people involved. It acts as the denominator in the formula: the higher the effort, the lower the final score.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

            These four criteria are independent, but when combined in a formula they generate a single score. Based on this result, product teams can objectively decide which features to build first. Let's now look at how the formula is applied to obtain the RICE score:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            RICE = (Reach x Impact x Confidence) \/ effort<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            For example, a product feature has a reach of 1,500 users per month, an estimated impact of 2, a confidence level of 80% (0.8), and an effort of approximately 3 person-months. Applying the formula gives the following result: (1.500x 2 x 0,8)\/3= 800<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The same calculation should be carried out for every initiative or feature. The resulting scores are then ranked from highest to lowest. In this way, the initiative with the highest score is prioritized over the others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            In summary, the RICE framework is an essential decision-making tool, but it is also a way to foster a work culture based on data, objectivity, and a constant focus on customer value.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
